THEODORE ROETHKE

HOME MUSEUM

Welcome to Roethke House

The Roethke House is the childhood home of the Pulitzer Prize winning poet, Theodore Roethke. Located at 1805 Gratiot in Saginaw, Michigan, the house is currently being used as a center for educational opportunities and historical awareness.

Through fundraising and ongoing membership drives, Friends of Theodore Roethke Foundation is working toward creating a home museum worthy of this internationally known and celebrated poet. It is our commitment to promote, preserve and protect the literary legacy of Theodore Roethke, by restoring his family residences for cultural and educational opportunities.

The year-long celebration of Theodore Roethke’s centennial birthday culminated with a weekend of events on May 30th and 31st, 2009.  Longtime friend and former student of Roethke, David Wagoner, joined us for this culminating celebration.  Well-known and beloved poet in his own right, Wagoner has received an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, the Sherwood Anderson Award, the Fels Prize, the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, the Eunice Tjetjens Memorial and English-Speaking Union prizes from Poetry magazine, and fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
